Orton Market Hall

Back

Within the village the Manor of Orton CIC not only own various parcels of land but also own the Market Hall which is currently leased to Orton Market Hall Trustees who manage and run the Market Hall on a daily basis running events  and concerts alongside letting for clubs and meetings.

HISTORY

Orton Market Hall was built in 1862 to provide an indoor space for the local butter producers to sell their goods. The hall is currently owned by Orton Manor Court. Management of the hall was run by members of the Manor Court until it became a charity, registered with the Charity Commission at the turn of this century. The Trustees of Orton Market Hall now control the management of the hall. In order to facilitate our lottery application in 2022, the Trustees had to provide evidence of ownership of the building, the result of which is that the Trustees lease the building from the Manor Court, for a nominal rent of £1.00 per annum.

MEETINGS

We hold four meetings a year. These meetings are private and not open to the general public, except by personal invitation. The one meeting to which the general public is invited is the annual General Meeting, which is usually held at the beginning of the year.

SUPPORT

Help and support in running Orton Market Hall comes from ACTion with communities in Cumbria www.cumbriaaction.org.uk , which comes under the umbrella organisation ‘acre’ network – Action with Communities in Rural England www.acre.org.uk . ACt provides advice on any aspect of running a community building, including guidelines for any policy documents we may need to write. We have recently received a great deal of help from the organisation towards our successful lottery bid.

CHARITY COMMISSION

Under the rules of the Charity Commission we have a constitution which we review annually. We have three officers- Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer and a number of ordinary Trustees, one of whom is the Booking Secretary. The Treasurer sends a revue of the charity, Orton Market Hall Trust, annually to the commission. Charity Commission-GoV.uk is a great source of information and advice for the responsibilities of Trustees.

You can check out everything to do with Orton Market Hall on their website. The above image was taken on a Farmers Market Day, full details appear on the Orton Farmers Market Website.
